What Is a Dramamine Dosage Calculator for Dogs?

It turns your dog's weight into a dimenhydrinate dose for motion sickness, then finds a tablet count that delivers it. Dimenhydrinate is the active ingredient in regular Dramamine, an antihistamine that acts on the vomiting centre of the brain. Vets use it off-label in dogs to prevent car and travel sickness.

The dose comes from Clinician's Brief, a veterinary clinical publication, which gives dimenhydrinate for dogs as 4 to 8 mg per kilogram by mouth every 8 hours. PetMD gives the same every-eight-hours interval and advises giving it 30 to 60 minutes before travel. We could not open the Merck Veterinary Manual's own dose table, so this page rests on one direct veterinary source plus a consistent secondary one, and we would rather tell you that than overstate it.

Not Every Dramamine Is Dimenhydrinate

The Dramamine name covers different drugs. Regular Dramamine and Dramamine for Kids contain dimenhydrinate. Dramamine Less Drowsy contains meclizine. Dramamine Non-Drowsy Naturals is ginger. They sit together on the shelf and an owner could reasonably assume they are interchangeable. They are not.

Veterinary sources dose meclizine differently from dimenhydrinate, and some veterinary travel products already split the two by dog size. We found only one veterinary source for a canine meclizine dose and could not confirm the tablet strength from a label, so this calculator refuses to dose Less Drowsy rather than apply the wrong numbers. For the ginger product, veterinary guidance is simply to use regular Dramamine in dogs instead.

How the Tablet Count Is Chosen

Because the dose is a range, there is usually more than one tablet count that would be acceptable. The calculator picks the smallest whole or half tablet that reaches the bottom of the range without going over the top. For a 44 lb dog that means two 50 mg tablets (100 mg, 5 mg/kg).

For small dogs this matters. Half of a 50 mg tablet is 25 mg, which is already over the top of the range for a dog under about 7 lbs. In that case the calculator says so and points you to the 25 mg children's chewable, instead of suggesting you cut a tablet into quarters. Tablets halve reasonably well; they do not quarter accurately.

Motion Sickness, Anxiety, or Something Else?

Drooling, lip-licking and vomiting once the car is moving point to motion sickness, which is common in young dogs and often eases with age. Panting, whining and pacing before the engine starts suggest anxiety, which an anti-nausea tablet does little for. And vomiting that has nothing to do with travel is a reason to call your vet, because an anti-nausea tablet can hide the signs that matter.

Veterinary sources advise against dimenhydrinate in dogs with angle-closure glaucoma or a urinary or bowel obstruction, and against combination products that contain other medicines. Drowsiness is a common effect.
