Whelping Box Size Calculator

Calculate exact whelping box dimensions based on your dam's size and expected litter.

What Is a Whelping Box and Why Does Size Matter?

A whelping box is the dedicated space where a pregnant dog gives birth and raises her puppies during the first 3-4 weeks of life. The right size is critical: too small and the dam cannot stretch out comfortably, leading to stress and increased risk of accidentally crushing puppies. Too large and the puppies wander too far from the warm nursing area, increasing the risk of fatal chilling in newborns.

A correctly sized whelping box has four key dimensions: length, width, wall height, and pig rail specifications. Each is determined by the dam's body size and the expected litter. This calculator uses the most commonly recommended breeder formulas, adjusted for dam shoulder height and litter size, to produce specifications you can take directly to a build or purchase.

The set-up timeline matters too. Most experienced breeders complete their whelping box at least 2 weeks before the due date (gestation day 49 or earlier) so the dam has time to investigate, accept, and begin nesting in the box. Without acclimation time, many dams will seek out an alternative nesting site like a closet or under furniture, where managing the birth is much harder.

These base dimensions assume a medium litter (4-7 puppies). Adjust upward by 10-25% for larger litters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a whelping box?

A whelping box is an enclosed area designed specifically for a dam to give birth and care for her puppies during the first 3-4 weeks of life. It provides a safe, warm, contained space that protects newborns and gives the dam a defined area for nursing and resting.

How big should a whelping box be?

A whelping box should be large enough for the dam to lie fully stretched out with her puppies and still have space to move comfortably. Small breeds (under 15 lbs) need 24-30 inches square, medium breeds (30-55 lbs) need 36 inches, large breeds (55-90 lbs) need 42-48 inches, and giant breeds (90+ lbs) need 48-60+ inches. Litter size also matters: larger litters need proportionally more space.

When should I set up the whelping box?

Set up the whelping box at least 2 weeks before the expected due date (around gestation day 49). This gives the dam time to acclimate and start nesting in the box rather than seeking out another location.

What are pig rails on a whelping box?

Pig rails are horizontal bars or shelves mounted inside the whelping box, set in from each wall by 3-6 inches and at a height of 4-7 inches above the floor. Their purpose is to create a gap that prevents the dam from accidentally crushing a puppy against the wall when she lies down.

How tall should whelping box walls be?

Wall height should be roughly two-thirds of the dam's shoulder height. High enough to keep the dam contained and to prevent newborn puppies from rolling or being kicked out, but low enough that the dam can step in and out without straining.

What materials should I use to build a whelping box?

Use materials that can be cleaned and sanitized: sealed plywood, melamine-finished MDF, vinyl-clad panels, or commercial plastic whelping boxes. Raw wood absorbs fluids and is difficult to disinfect.

Where should I put the whelping box?

Place the whelping box in a quiet, warm, draft-free area away from household traffic. The dam needs a sense of security and privacy. Ambient temperature should be maintainable at 75-80°F during the first week.

Do I need a heat source in the whelping box?

Yes. Newborn puppies cannot regulate body temperature for the first 2-3 weeks. Target zone temperature: 85-90°F for week 1, 80-85°F for week 2, 75-80°F for week 3, then ambient. Always provide a cooler zone the puppies can move to.

How long do puppies stay in the whelping box?

Typically 3-4 weeks. After that puppies become mobile and need a larger area, often via an attached exercise pen. By 5-6 weeks puppies are weaning and the original whelping box is usually retired.

Can I buy a whelping box or do I have to build one?

Commercial plastic whelping boxes are available from $150-$700 in sizes from 24 inches to 48-60 inches. Custom builds are common for giant breeds where commercial sizes are inadequate, and are often more affordable.
